Listening to: Calm Down Dearest by Jamie T

I never used to read blogs, they annoyed me.
Blatantly I was looking at the wrong ones, because in the past 6 months I've found amazing artists, images, music and stories thanks to a whole range of blogs I happened to stumble across. I hope my page will give at least a few of you inspiration or show you something you haven't seen before.

So, to get to the point, I am becoming an artist. I'm studying in London, which is a big change from the rural town in Holland that I grew up in. London is madly intense and intimidating, but with that comes madly inspiring, exciting, challenging and diverse. Personally these characteristics make this city perfect for my artistic development, however relentless the process of self examination is made. Although questioning myself can be a painful process, I wouldn't have it any other way because I want to learn as much as I can, as fast as I can and I know that can't be achieved by ignorance.

My main interest in the field of Art and Design is Sculpture, but I believe drawings and sketches are intrinsic to this speciality too. Within Sculpture, as well as outside of it, my focus is predominantly on bodies. I'm quite a sensual person, and I feel my art definitely reflects that.

Acrylic gloss, make-up, gold leaf

Latex on clay

Gills
Clay

These are all pieces that I've made in the past month and a half, where I've tried to pinpoint what interests me about bodies, and what materials I can experiment with that look best. All are clay, but each has a different finish.

Some experimentation:

Plastic, zip, varnish spray, glitter, oil paint, thread

Alginate

For this one I opened my mouth and shoved alginate on my face. I wouldn't suggest it, but the result is definitely interesting!

Artists to look at?
  • Glenn Brown - Contemporary artist; I find the level of detail in his work astounding.

  • Frederic Leighton - beautiful contours and shape.
